It's usually all down to the age they started (plus marketing). The older they are when start, the less "pure" fans expect them to be/remain, but if they start early they'll have to hold on to that young girl image as long as possible.

Aya only managed to hang around because her scandal broke near that nebulous cut-off point when the fans no longer expect a pure idol... though she still gets plenty of hate.
