All written laguages started as ideographic characters back in 3k BC. Then the phoenicians, around 1k BC, invented an alphabet, greeks perfected one of their own and after Alexander's conquest of the east it became the basis of almost all subsequent alphabets across the world.

You cannot really compare alphabets with ideograms.
