I understand this girl less and less with each passing moment. Is she an idiot? I question the very possibility that she may have the ability to form complex thought. Perhaps this is her attempt at a joke? Or she merely feels distraught by my lack of a name. But why of all things, ‘Maria’? What prompted her to come up with that particular name of the many thousands that exist to date? She’s far too impulsive to be a youkai, and yet she is so obviously a youkai.

“Okay, so Nue it is, then,” she says, much to her own dismay, “So, uh… What was I going to say again? …You’ll have to pardon me; my memory gets a bit fuzzy at times.”

“So Okuu,” I ask, “who’s the girl out in the yard?”

I point down to the girl still piling corpses around the outer walls. Okuu seems to know her, so out of convenience’s sake I pose the question. I’ve plenty of other questions I would like to ask, but most of them would likely prove too daunting for this child’s fragile and forgetful mind.

“That’s Rin,” she replies, “Everyone calls her Orin—“

“I’m familiar with my own language’s honorifics,” I say, sparing myself the impending lecture, “Why is she piling corpses around the palace?”

“Long story, that. Call it a science experiment.”

“What sort of science requires so many hundreds of dead bodies?”

“The bodies are fuel, like coal for a boiler.”

“…Huh?” I’m lost already, “Look, I know this isn’t Eishou, and I’m not up to speed on modern technology, but please try to keep it simple will you?”

“A… steam boiler isn’t simple enough?”

I shake my head. I can’t help not knowing when I’ve never seen nor heard of one before.

“It’s fairly old technology,” she asserts.

“Clearly not old enough,” I say, beginning to wonder just how long I’ve been asleep.

“How about wood for a fire then? Is that a better image? Fire is fairly stone-age.”

A lot of people think she's harder than Okuu. But I'm the opposite, I can't for the life of me consistently perform well against Okuu even though I've practiced her way more than I have Orin.
