We start with the fact that Satoko and Keiichi both seem to be in love with a girl named Akane (who we find out is actually Inori). They say that Akane is the "girl of their dreams", and they both seem to think she likes them back. The only problem? This girl doesn't exist.
In other words, Satoko is in love with an imaginary friend.
I'll get to why this is interesting later, but first, let's look at something else. In episode 2, Satoko mentions that they have been friends since elementary school. Now, if you've seen Higurashi: When They Cry before, then you know what happens when a character says this. It leads to a lot of confusion, because a) Satoko never met Akane until high school and b) everyone knows that there are no coincidences in Higurashi. So why would Satoko lie about having known her for years? Why would she make up such a ridiculous story?
The answer is simple. She didn't have to.
Since Inori is Akane and doesn't actually exist, it means that Keitarou is in love with Satoko's imaginary friend too. And he thinks she loves him too. That's right—they were both in love with someone who doesn't exist. This makes perfect sense. As I mentioned earlier, Inori doesn't actually exist. But even if she did, wouldn't she still be an imaginary friend? Since she's not real, she could be anyone. You see where this is going...
So, does that mean Keitarou is in love with an imaginary friend that he created himself? Again, yes. He's in love with his own imagination.
