Babymetal's supposed popularity has nothing to do with the fact they're idols, it only owes to the metal side of the business. To be more correct, it's because metalheads are generally shallow fucks who'll lap up anything inconditionally as long as it contains a mere hint of "metal", no matter if it's serious, ham-fisted or just plain ironical. I dare say that 90% of their western followers are even ignorant that the group is a mere appendage of Sakura Gakuin, and keep living under the delusion that it is an independent venture created out of true interest for the metal genre.
Make no mistake, this is exactly what Amuse was aiming for when they shilled the group hard on news sites back at the beginning of the year. I'm sure you might have noticed how all articles about them overemphasized the metal aspect up to a ridiculous degree while omitting as many details as possible about their idol background. Was it done on purpose? You be the judge.
What's sure is that the west is still a moral pussy when it comes to all things idol, any situation that might involve a relatively young female peformer and a relatively older male audience is enough to throw them into an emotional confusion that they can't recover from. You can imagine how things would devolve if we started telling them that Sakura Gakuin has creepy pet names for their fans such as 父兄, for example.
