Okay, I was under the impression that sub skills activate upon the start of battle, but apparently they don't. That was the source of my confusion.

I can confirm color specific buffs, damage and attack/defense buffs are unique to their own, but you only have 5 spots to apply buffs/debuffs. Sub buff applies upon switching in of course and dead ally loses their buff/debuff effects.
