perhaps because the modern consumers prefer functionality and availability. Machines have been developed, low skill workers trained to mass produce jeans, t shirts and wool-poly blended suits. Clothes painstakingly handmade through traditional methods can't compete with these articles in terms of cost.

Japanese clothes are beautiful indeed. After WW2 they copied American jeans making and improved it into their own famous japanese denim that is highly regarded worldwide. Their indigo dyed and sashiko fabrics are also well sought after.

I haven't traveled to Japan myself but Kyoto and Kojima, Okayama are worth a visit if you're interested in pretty traditional clothes and denim.
