It's always hugely expensive for the host country, and giant multinational corporations rake in all the profits. Rich countries can survive the games, but poor ones like Brazil and Greece (2004) are completely fucked.

A lot of the venues in Athens have been abandoned and looted of valuables (like copper wiring). I suspect Brazil will suffer the same fate, but even quicker.
