The border is literally un-crossable though, unless your name is Yukari. Reimu might be able to boot you out if you've somehow entered in of your own volition (why you'd want to do that, i don't know, but Sumireko and Merry do in fact exist). I like to think of Sumireko as one of those American tourists that gets a clean and not-so-murderous vacation trip of the place, rather than being dumped into Muenzuka like the rest of us chumps by Yukari. The only difference is you'll be lauded for bringing in outside knowledge instead of kidnapped or quietly assassinated, that is if you make it to the village. You won't be shot for trying to leave if you're a human resident, but you might get eaten by a youkai or get offed by the shrine maiden for trying to become one, magician or otherwise, so leaving isn't really an option for the uneducated masses there.

Instead of being stuck in the1960s, they're stuck in the 1860s. Modern plumbing? Electricity? Maybe, if you're a God and can hire the kappa to make a perpetual motion machine for you, but good luck with that. Fun stuff - but even if you managed to get into Gensokyo, were able to get competent enough at magic to toss your humanity out the window, and somehow figured out how the border worked, you'd still be stuck living in pre-industrial Japan. Quality of life wise, you might not die as easily since Eirin might save your life if she's feeling particularly graceful, but in all likelihood it'll suck unless you're the survivalist type that can thrive in that environment.

Gensokyo isn't particularly grim, it's just kind of melancholic. It's a 40x40-km cage for things that are forgotten, including you for when you get dumped into it as youkai food.
