Cleaning up and looking after the abandoned shrines, hokora, and jizou statues dotting the mountains could be something worth doing. Though that's something that needs a lot of research and care to make sure you're doing it correctly, lest you end up disturbing something that had a very good reason to be abandoned.

Foxes smell because they are animals and mark their territory with piss and don't care if it splashes on them.
Ran is a proper lady and can use the bathroom with all the elegance of a refined and regal noblewoman, as is befitting of her status as a Kyuubi. I bet she smells incredible. Incredible! Her care and attention to detail wouldn't allow her to go without grooming. How else would she keep her noble tails as perfect and lush as they are? Also, canonically goes to hot springs (AFiEU hot spring article) and since she has a lot of free time in the winter I imagine she'd be going often to relax.
Though violet glands are an issue, and those probably carried over considering they are at the base of a fox's tail. And nine of them too? The tails would smell lovely and fragrant like jasmine, but I wouldn't go to the base of the tails, that is where the epicenter of smell is.

Could it have been better? Yes. Could they have had more fanservice with cute girls doing cute things, and tit & ass shots? Definitely. But for the only "big" budget Touhou anime I think they did a good enough job.
