We know that Gura likes old westerns and country songs, and playing the banjo, right? All the kind of cowboy stuff that she seems to have an interest in. She even snuck a cowboy into her debut thumbnail.
Now, this is an obvious interest of hers, but I can't blame her; cowboys are rad. But what I can do is theorize that it is something that she wanted to make clear since her very name was chosen.
Gura is her name, right? Well, only half right. You see, the Japanese are infamous for being unable to parse the R and L sounds (see: Final Fantasy IV, Lydia translated as "Rydia"). So if we were to assume that the Japanese standard is still true, then her true name is "Gawr Gula."
That may not mean much to you, but "Gula" is actually a real word, just not in English. Instead, it is in Hungarian, as a family name.

So, if we were to follow this to it's natural conclusion, Gawr Gura's true name is "Gawr Cowboy." However, I'm not done yet.
There's still her other name, Gawr. Seemingly not a name that connects to much other than the sound she makes, but I think it may be a coded reference to a different name that sounds similar, "Gar." Gar is actually a nickname for the founder of a Peruvian town with lots of what would now be considered "Cowboys," García Hurtado de Mendoza.
That may seem random, but it isn't. Do you know why that name is so important? Because the town he founded? NAZCA, PERU.
Gawr Gura's original character was going to be Nazca, an Alpaca Cowgirl who would go on to lead HoloEN, which at the time was going to be simply "HoloAmericas." When that was scrapped and the focus was narrowed to HoloEN, they repurposed Gura into the shark character she was now, but left hints to remind themselves of their original project.
