If you want to be that guy, metalcore started even sooner than that with bands like DEP and Shai Hulud.

It reached its peak popularity in the mid 2000s though.

A whole bunch of metalcore bands had their albums reach the US top 10 Billboard, not just top 10 rock/metal but top 10 of all genres and that was around 2006-2008. A couple of them were even nominated for Grammy Awards.

Bilboard doesn't have a metal category, so of course it gets lumped into the vague "hard rock" category.

You also omitted their position in the UK's Rock & Metal chart, as well as the fact that, of course, their album was dominating the itunes Metal chart in several countries, and not the idol chart.
