I left that vague, so Anons have more liberties since the sword is so open to the world, and mistakenly thought it wouldn't matter at all, since at the point I made it the understanding was that the finale was coming soon after. Then we got the party… Not saying it was a bad thing the party, it was great developing Hana, Yukari, Sanae and the 'mu, still was more time outside than what I thought initially. My take? Everything inside and on the surface can be perceived, and the sword is as alive as Kasen and Yukari are alive, though it lacks a thinking consciousness; it's just another part of them. It won't ping them for every ounce of prayer it feeds off, but when 'threats' are detected, then it will respond like a nervous system and send a signal to the 'brain', Yukari and Kasen, for them to check what is happening
tl;dr: the sword is a magical limb.
