I think the complaints are usually that they're boring or that all the titles/series are the same. Without more precise language/criticism, it's hard to know for sure but I'm guessing it's because they don't really do the massive rapey rough group sex spectacles that keep pushing the envelope, taking things to the next level etc. Maybe a lot of people here associate that with non-boring JAV or perhaps that style is somehow the only way JAV can be exciting.
Madonna isn't pretending to be anything it's not. Their whole premise is just beautiful mature women, varying amounts of drama, exaggerated realism, passionate sex, and lots of polish. The series thing isn't unique to them either and is basically how most of the industry operates. Maybe there's the perception that Madonna rely on their successful series more? Not sure, but they add new series often enough too + different actresses bring their own thing for their entries so I personally don't mind and actually look forward to the quirks
