...the difference in meaning is due to a mistake that was made when the word was introduced to Japanese. Something similar happened to "cunning", which somehow means "cheating on a test" in Japanese.
Incidentally, if a Japanese person were to think up an abbreviation for "sports pants", I doubt he'd come up with "supattsu". Something like "supopan" sounds more likely.
