>studying kana as I want to get into japanese
>learn hiragana in 2 weeks
>cousin says he learned it in under a week
>take his advice to set a faster pace for myself
>learn katakana in in 5 days
>keep studying them until I have them memorized and can write almost as fast as I can in English

2 years later
>a friend tries to learn japanese
>2 months later he's still stuck on kana and hasn't memorized either hiragana or katakana
>uses random japanese words in sentences even when talking to non japanese people
>tell him not to do that because he sounds like a cunt
>tells me it helps him learn japanese and that if I was serious about learning I'd do it too
>tell him I mastered kana in 3 weeks and could have done it a lot faster if I tried harder
>says I'm lying and says I don't speak japanese in public because I don't know how
>we travel to japan together and I translate everything for him
>can't have conversations but can easily read signs due to studying kanji for a long time
>can ask directions and book hotels and he stays quiet for the whole trip
>acts like a autistic cunt and gives me the silent treatment

>we are no longer friends and he's given up on learning japanese
>I'm STILL not conversational but can read tweets and understand what people are saying at a basic level
>every single person I meet says they're still struggling with kana despite them studying for years
>got to uni to see a exchange student
>from america and wants to go to japan to teach English like me
oh how long have you been studying japanese?
>just over a year
>I still stuck on hiragana and katakana, it's so hard
>あなたの名前は?
>アノんです
>spend the rest of class ignoring her

we used to have a japanese course at my uni but it shut down the year I enrolled due to many people failing the course. we still have mandarin and arabic but for some reason the japanese students are so incompetent they all fail despite it being a much easier language than the former two. I look more into it and it turns out the final test was on an N5 level and I'm currently N4.

I'm not even trying to brag, where I used to work people got to conversational in 8 months and mock me for how slow I'm learning it but why the fuck does this language attract so many worthless sacks of shit. I mean how the fuck can you honestly spend a year studying japanese and not even know kana.
