That time has existed since the 50s. The shift from electronics to moe/anime/manga entertainment most likely has another reason. Outside of Japan, most people didn't know a thing about Akiba before it became the otaku mecca and put it on everyone's map.

This will actually happen as PCs are getting miniaturized and being integrated into screens and what not but it's likely there will still be a niche segment for video editing/high-end gaming rigs.

New markets are opening up for electronics enthusiast with the rise of drones and miniature robots so not everything is lost.
