Usually when an empire collapses, other groups rush in to fill the power vacuum. This often results in colonization of previously occupied territory.
When the Roman Empire collapsed, Germans started colonizing Britain. These people are called the Anglo Saxons, and their language replaced the native British language. Later in 1066, England was conquered by the Normans, who are from the north of France. Their domination of England greatly affected the language, introducing lots of french words and pronunciations, which often involves a lot of convoluted spelling and silent letters. Since then the language has evolved and changed organically with words being introduced as technology, science, and culture evolve over time. American english has a lot of german words, because of the large number of germans that immigrated to america.
