I'm a little surprised by it too, but I don't think it's necessarily unwarranted or really all that shocking especially if you remember that the same thing happened to the UFO crew, popular for a little bit at release, then nothing, then a sudden surge of popularity and now Byakuren and company are some of the most popular touhous.

I think that kind of thing is caused in part by attachment to characters from before. In Miko's case it was a lot of "Oh, compared to Baykuren she's got stupid hair and is weak." That was that, pretty much end of discussion. I recall a lot of Byakuren-Utsuho comparisons like that. SoPM really helped out her case too, highlighting the fact that Miko is actually a very interesting character and is quite powerful, well deserving of her stage six spot.

ALso, you now have dedicated artists like cercis, makuwari, and to a lesser extent, yetworldview kaze filling Pixiv with lots of nice images.
