Umekawa Akiyoshi was a robber and a gentleman. Despite dropping out of middle school, he had a library lined with books ranging from Freud to Dostoevskij and his interests even included Pier Paolo Pasoini.
In 1979 he robbed the Mittsubishi bank in Osaka, when it was clear he was being encircled by police and he had no way to escape, he ran the inside of the bank like his little kingdom. He took all the bank employees and gave them specific roles, from the watch-keeper making sure that no one intruded into the building to the telephonist that communicated with the police on the outside on his behalf. He also made sure to allowed to escape the few pregnant customers that were inside of the building at the time before the police siege was complete.
To make sure his person was well protected, he sat around the boss desk and had the female employees kneel over the desks around, to serve as human shield. He had at some point ordered them to strip naked as a show of power, except the ones who were married with children because he didn't want to create unnecessary scandals. Thinking that making only women strip naked was unfair, he also ordered some of the male employees to strip as well. Some more time later he ordered everyone to dress back.
Every day he ordered police to bring him luxury food for him to eat, but first he had one of the bank employees taste them to test if they were laced with sleeping drugs. Almost prophetically, one the last day before the assault time finally broke in he ordered full courses of spaghetti, steaks, soba and ice cream for everyone to eat together, saying "this is our last supper".
He died from a shot in the chest by the police. Two policement and two bank employees died at various points of the siege, but none of the customers that were taken hostages inside the building were harmed.
RIP Akiyoshi.
