I definitely think it has to do with, for the lack of a better word, "normalfag" hegemony, and the marketing and expansion of easily digestible normalfag forums, social media, etc.

4chan's anonymity unwittingly became a bastion against this hegemony for a while, but media coverage and so-called 4chan "colonies" have just catalysed a break from anonymity, and has given an outlet to "4chan" identity outside of 4chan proper-- things like the lolcats website, knowyourmeme, and Facebook and Reddit "4chan groups" have, although alien and literally unproved to be populated by OG 4chan users, have been given the mantle of defining 4chan's identity by larger society.
With some migration from them here, 4chan has be forcibly included in normalfag internet discourse, and has thus been forced to define itself against the rest of the internet.
As this has been a constant process, increasing with each new member, we can observe that 4chan jumps a shark and starts to be influenced instead off influence. /jp/ was briefly safe because of the otaku nature of otaku culture, but is on its death knell, because of ironic weeaboo /bant/ "culture" type things
