I think this is more of a graphical limitation: the characters probably circle around each other during duels, we just don't see it because that would require ZUN actually making a locale for the backgrounds and assigning camera angles, instead of just generating them and autoscrolling.
I also think Gensokyo is larger than most people think since the Garden of the Sun is supposed to be close to it's "heart".

That's lame, though maybe I just have different priorities.
I usually like when there's some internal logic and consistency, so unexplained differences from the source material can be distracting sometimes.

About Gensokyo's geography, where is the Forest of Magic is located in relation to Human Village?
I thought it was mentioned in PMiSS that it's to the west and Bamboo Forrest to the south, but after re-reading I couldn't find it so I must be misremembering it. Fan maps can't agree on this either. I've found picrelated, with its maker claiming it was the most accurate, but I'm not sure about it's locations for the Forest of Magic.

Damm Anon, months ago I was gathering fan made map of Gensokyo to make a Cities: Skylines map and forgot about it. Someone made one but I don't think it's very playable.

For a sense of scale with fan maps, Gensokyo's lake is probably based on the irl lake Suwa.
