I get you anon. A good dictionary for an Asian language might just cost money. Wether you buy a book, a device like the one you talk about, or something digital. The kids shit talking you are lost if they think google translate does more good than harm especially when you are learning. They also might not know that 10-20% of the cards in EVERY beginner Anki deck ever posted here are just downright wrong. From what I read you could get some paid apps and do the same function that those devices you are looking for would do on your smartphone (something like Monokakido). Maybe ask some people that actually live/work in japan? Or try to get a used one for cheap.
