I actually like the whole idea of utilizing "threads of magic" rather than having them being purely sentient.

In a way, Alice as a character is the "mad clockmaker" archetype of Touhou.
All those amazingly beautiful dolls, maybe thousands or millions, each worth a fortune. Failures, all of them, falling just slightly short in her quest for perfection. All except the latest in the line, which is not a failure, but a future failure.

Why doesn't a charismatic Touhou try and unite Gensokyo, by force or diplomacy, instead of tolerating a bunch of squabbling factions we have now? Don't the Touhous have dreams of a great united Gensokyo empire?
