James Bond is the OG escapism. Ian Fleming was an actual Spy. Intelligence work IRL is boring as shit. So when Ian Fleming wrote of high-tech gadgets, fast cars, and sexy ladies. It was all an escapist fantasy to him.

Just like how Ian Fleming's escapism makes the most money during times of hardships, the explosion of escapism with the Marvel Cinematic Universe in America and Isekai in Japan are both fuelled by the fact that nobody has any money. The economy has been fucked for the past several years, especially for young people.

So yeah, I'm definitely echoing all your sentiments on the lack of hope, and increase in cynicism over the past few years. All of which is tied into an explosion in escapist fantasy.
