It's not completely useless for helping memorization, but I'd rather spend time just reading, which is a more effective use of my time. I've never had to write anything by hand in Japanese except the time I took a class when I was in grad school, and realistically everything is typed out digitally in everyday use, especially if you don't live in Japan.
