Just came back from the DC Expo. Spoilers for people going to NYC & MC, I guess.
It wasn't as verisimilitudinous as I'd hoped. The glass screen took up a third of the stage, and you could clearly see its edges. Add to that how the band was all on the sides, and the background was mostly black, and I rarely got the feeling that there was an actual 3D Vocaloid on stage; watching a glorified movie screen like it was a live concert started to make me feel a bit silly. Maybe the tech can't have her dancing right in front of complex shapes yet, but it's still disappointing. For a few brief glimpses when the lighting and movement were just right, my eyes would be fooled and she'd look like a real 3D form, but only a few.
Speaking of lighting, no matter how the stage was lit, the characters would always be in bright white light. Colored lights would be shooting everywhere, bouncing off the band but not Miku. Seems nitpicky, but it kept giving away that she wasn't there. Considering the light show was carefully choreographed, why couldn't they sync the virtual light with it?
And the virtual choreography: there was no physically resetting herself between songs, just a simple fade out/fade in. Combined with how there was practically no attempt at audience interaction or anything of the sort--there was only one segment where she acknowledged the audience at all--and the characters felt less like a tangible presence than an AVI playlist. I understand that talking and responding to a real crowd is a bit far fetched, but was there no way they could act like they were actually in the building?
I'm glad she was actually ~5-1/2 feet tall, at least. I was afraid they would make her literally larger than life, but making her human-sized lent just a little more believably to her. Just a little.
Please believe me, I tried to let go, I tried to have fun, I really did, but I just couldn't help but find the whole experience fairly unimpressive.
