In the American version it was cut. At least, the version that aired. Again, they dubbed everything, but some bits were cut for transmission.

Some things must have been difficult to localize though. Subtext is easy to get rid of, but the male lead was "in love with" another male character, and it became a pretty important plot point in a few episodes. I'd like to know how the hell they explained that.

Yes, but she also just has an innocent obsession with capturing her on film in cute clothes. They downplayed this for the US dub because they thought it would be creepy.
