DDs are cheaper to maintain and more plentiful. They also get a much bigger damage boost in night battles (I think).
I've seen my level 30 Murakumo one-shot crit a CVL in nightbattle whereas my Hyper Kitakami-sama never seems to land a hit at night.
There's eventually a certain point in the game where you'll start to value the lightweight class ships more in your fleet composition because of their easier maintenance and general utility (evasion tank/torpedo/anti-sub).
