I was thinking about Davy Crockett launchers, which I figured where old enough and a better analogy since the one pulling the trigger is never going to be able to escape the blast radius anyway.

Also want to say in either case, the Yakumo's don't really 'know' exactly what will happen, since the beads are sort of a one-of-a-kind specialty weapon and they've never died in their wearer's possession before. Yukari's making an educated guess based on who made the thing and Ran's making a logical deduction based on other magic she's seen. Different characters may not see it the same way or even as a weapon.
