I think 10 seconds is still short enough, but I do agree that just looking at a card for 30 seconds is not gonna do anything either. So what I started doing instead, is that I looked up the word in a jisho, and looked up the individual kanji and radicals to see I could find any sense in that, specially useful for troublesome words with the same kanji, or kanji where you have very similar radicals.
Bashing through hitting "again" like a hammer may work, but this way I was actively engaging my brain, and words that took like 10 times and barely stick for a couple of days, only take like a couple times now.
Even the other fag in the reply chain admits that a alternative form of study is beneficial.
