Personally I think art is the least important aspect of a VN. It matters a lot in Nukige, but barely at all in everything else. Quality of writing, story, plot, and pacing are much more important.
The characters in Oonabara to Wadanohara all look like weird elf monsters, there's barely any CGs, and all of the music is royalty-free MIDI, but I still think Wadanohara is adorable because she's a complex character with traits and flaws who grows and changes over the course of the story and I got be there with her for it. It's harder to write characters like that in a moege because they're averse to conflict and plot but you can still bounce two characters against each other and make them both grow.
Still haven't started Kokoro Log though. Cautiously optimistic.
