i am starting to realize that most japanese learners will never reach the point where reading japanese feels genuinely effortless like their native language, and it's not only because they don't read enough. it's because they refuse to allow themselves to relax back into the childlike state of mind that can easily turn symbols into rich vivid meaning, with no other mental or emotional complexes getting in the way (such as feeling like you have to prove something by getting good at japanese, inferiority complexes projected onto the language, できる vs できない false dichotomy, etc). all those concepts do is cause noise in the mind that interferes with the natural process of acquiring a language to the point of effortlessness. and most learners just refuse to let go of all that noise.
