As a white American man who went to Japan I will tell you that sure as hell was not what my experience was like. I did have some women try to get me to join a religious cult, but other than that most of the time people avoid you. Except the Elders, the old men and women who would often ask what I was doing visiting Saga, Oita, Kumamoto, Shimane, Tottori etc. Many were happy to see a foreigner visit their part of Japan. I even had an old lady try to help me, thinking I was coming back from Nagasaki on my way to Osaka or Tokyo, and she thought I was standing on the wrong track, but no, my ticket was for Saga to Kumamoto, and I showed her my ticket. She lived in Kagoshima and was 73 years old, and asked why I was going to Kumamoto. I said to see Mt Aso and Kumamoto Castle.
