My theory is that "Prince" Shotoku was always a girl in 2hu canon, but Japanese people are/were misogynistic enough to believe that any good enough ruler simply *had to* be a man, because women are *obviously* incompetent. Some historical revisionism later, and Shotoku was as every historian *knows*, a famous (male) prince.
