The Kourindou versions are using the character designs from Curiosities in Lotus Asia, the earlier fumos use ZUN's designs from the games. They would only be lesser versions if you care deeply about how the characters are portrayed.
Personally, they are some of my favourite designs and I hope we get more of them in the future.
