because in the time it would take your brain to get a chance to work it's memory muscles, your eyes have already decided to throw you a hint before letting your language acquisition device work it's magic. maybe you're some superhuman who doesn't get the urge to take the path of least resistance even subconsciously, but i know i do, and most people do.
