Well consider your options: you could make him anything because at a sci-fi setting you have technology to make up for whatever race difference.
You could go the Metroid route and have your MC naturally part-alien or genetically enhanced, you can simply go the normal human route and give him a suit of armor or a ship and say he is pretty skilled at those things.
So he'd essentially still be a cute human to the eyes of motherly MGs, and at the same time some skilled warrior to the battle-addicted ones.
