Also it's heavily implied that if Reimu dies then the Hakurei Barrier goes kaput which would be really really bad. Spellcard rules let youkai be able to have a "fair" fight against Reimu without destroying Gensokyo and also being able to keep their role as youkai (although it's mentioned that if she loses then Reimu just has rematches until she wins)
