"34" number reference and the talk about her having faced Bern in a game and Bern miraculously winning (with Bern's abilities being described as always rolling the dice over and over until winning, while Lambda had a guaranteed kill). Takano would be the logical assumption at that point even without seeing the design reference in spite of some odd lines here and there, like how it's said Bern did it as a lone piece. Although at the time most people seemed to expect the connections to be even more indirect than they turned out to be. Or at least that's how I remembered the comments from the Western fanbase.

Even in Lambdadelta's case, her popularity seemed to only improve with episode 8, where she became an allied character. It's why you see some people acting like Lambda could never have been as cruel as Gou/Sotsu Satoko.

There are entire essays written from the point of view of Lambda always being a benign character and any cruelty being faked. The narrative itself never seemed to bring up again the mentions of Lambda torturing Bern in the past from ep1/2 once Chiru started. And even those were just a couple of vague lines that fans often attempted to interpret in the most benign way possible.

Rika -> Bern before Gou/Sotsu was seen as a complete split. Like Bern were Rika's rejects or something.

The Satoko -> Lambda connection was generally seen as just a couple of random references or even Lambda attempting to mimic her to please Bern (granted, this theory is stupid, but we obviously lacked any actual story context to justify Satoko as Lambda). The general idea was that she was an unrelated ancient witch with no personal ties to Rika that just randomly participated in her suffering (although some of the early dialogue in Umineko makes no sense with that scenario compared to what we have now).

I remember -one- person that tried to justify a direct connection as Lambda being born from Satoko's suffering, and how that started before Rika's own suffering so she could be considered pre-existing to Bern. Obviously the actual explanation didn't turn out anything like that either.
