>Not starting with your MC
This works in conjunction with the first bit of advice. Some people like to start their stories with other characters that may (or may not) play a crucial role within the narrative. But to be honest you should always start your novel with your main character. Sometimes writers like to introduce a character that dies in the first few pages of the book as a sort of “hook”. Don’t do this unless you’re writing a murder mystery or something along those lines. In every other instance it detracts attention and precious time away from the main story and the MC (and any other character that doesn’t die right away or actually has a place within the story).
