to add to that I'd say the first things we learn about Marisa, at least in EoSD, are that she is boisterous and also a liar. While she's changed a lot over the years, these things haven't changed. "Lying" and dishonesty are huge aspects of her character. She keeps secrets and tries to pretend she's better than she actually is, or more confident than she actually is. She also doesn't talk about her past or her efforts and is touchy about them. ZUN's described her as the relatable human protagonist of Touhou, who is necessary to be able to connect with the universe and stories. Reimu's definitely too strange for most people, while Marisa is very realistically human.
