Regular people use t-shirts to show something that interests them. By having heavy metal motifs or some family guy joke, it makes it easier to have something to talk about with that person, since you automatically get a glimpse of their interests.

Sad fucks who have no social life but still try to hold on to a flicker of hope that one day they'll get out of their hole will use wallpapers for this purpose. Surely some people escape this stereotype, but those who don't are exceptionally easy to find. Take as an example the people who are posting their whole desktop besides their wallpaper. Since they know they'll get few replies for simply posting their average-at-best wallpaper art, they throw you all their desktop to show you all the cool programs and "obscure" shit so they can feel unique in their shallowness.
