That and the tale of Kaguya-hime herself, which serves as the other main influence of TH08.

In this case, I think it was really just ZUN imagining the Moon as being literally populated with rabbits that look like the otaku trend of humanoid characters with playboy* rabbit ears and running with it in his own unique way that served the game plot.
* I know drawn depictions of humanoids with rabbit ears is not necessarily inspired directly by it or inherently erotic, but I don't see another factor for its popularization in the 70s onward in media in general.
