I mean, for all they're mostly portrayed as a lovable gang of honorable samurai in most modern Japanese media the Shinsengumi were essentially a paramilitary police death squad who killed anyone even tangentially suspected of disloyalty, and both Chusingura and Miburo actually lean into that fairly heavily.

After reading Miburo, my suspicion is the author thinks the shinsengumi were cool and sympathizes with them, but politically agrees with Sakamoto Ryoma / Katsura Kogoro. Every time Ryoma shows up, she destroys the shinsengumi with facts and logic, mostly by explaining that guns and warships will always beat swords (although the author absolutely despises the new Meiji government and there's multiple diatribes about how the 廃仏毀釈 and consequent destruction of temples destroyed irreplaceable pieces of Japanese history and culture).
You can kind of see why the author likes both the ako roushi and shinsengumi, and they're paralleled quite a bit in BnK - they're both samurai clinging to a historical hardcore form of bushido that arguably never even really existed and was only ever a fantasy.
