the fights were just an example. other examples: i think the story felt a little too short; i didn't see much character development from anyone besides sojuro; it doesn't have the deep delve into the aozaki lineage that we got in tsukihime for the tohnos.
in short i didn't feel like the story had the level of depth that stay night or tsuki did. not even a lot of conflict of moral codes besides the "mages don't treat normal humans with empathy" thing. aoko and alice never step into the realm of evil, although tbf touko does get some humanizing exposition. this is setting aside the underdeveloped church affiliated characters who are always a treat in nasu works.
maybe it's an issue of it being a kinetic novel without choices. or maybe it's because mahoyo is the first thing nasu conceived before knk even. whatever it is, i think that fate, tsuki, even knk are more artistically mature works, even if mahoyo's presentation is tight.
