Regarding to >>43173911 , what do you think is the end game for youkai? I'm talking about the "ultimate goal of the youkai", mentioned in WaHH.

We know very well youkai eat humans and live out of the humans' fear in order for them to survive. However, a lot of outsiders are able to escape from Gensokyo and therefore youkai won't always get fed. There might be some population balance problem behind the scenes we don't know about. Not enough humans to sustain fear for youkai or something like that. It would be necessary for youkai to figure out a plan B if things would go wrong.

In WaHH, Yukari sent zashiki-warashi into Outside World as spies for youkai, when she got the opportunity. Zashiki-warashi probably served as information sources of the current events and situation outside Gensokyo, which could come useful. My personal theory is that Yukari's plan B for youkai and Gensokyo is to assimilate them to the Outside World, modern Japan. Some youkai are still popular in modern Japan (oni, tengu, tanuki), but "lower-class youkai" (such as youkai born from long age) would need assistance in order for them to exist in Outside World. That would include customs and rules of modern society (though the big youkai could accustom themselves to them), where they wouldn't necessary be dependent on fear and eating human flesh. Yukari uses the info gathered by zashiki-warashi to sustain the existence of youkai and to maintain the balance between humans and youkai, even if the environment changes
