when using a monolingual dictionary in yomichan, is there any way that you can easily look up the words you don't know in definitions with the jmdict bilingual dictionary?

i really want to transition to monolingual and get out of the bilingual comfort zone but there's still so many words i don't know in the definitions which makes it really hard.

Is it worth dropping texthookers and mouse-over pop-up dictionaries and manually looking up words instead with Google Translate's handwriting search?

Will the extra time investment result in better retention of vocabulary or will it slow down reading so much as to just be inefficient and on the whole detrimental?
