The first thing you should realize about defense is that there's no trick to defense. It's a psychological state. Here's how to play defensively. In order, follow this list as soon as you think someone is in tenpai and you decide you're not gonna go for it.

1. Discard what they have already discarded.
2. Discard what someone else has already discarded in the same turn
3. Discard something that someone else has already discarded after a player declares Riichi
4. Discard from an impossible wait, like you have three honor tiles in your hand and you can see the fourth one.
5. Discard from improbable waits, like you can see all the 2's and three 1 characters, it's highly unlikely that he's waiting on a 1 character.
5. Suji reading. The 1-4-7 trick.
6. Discard from pairs. If the first one goes through, the rest will go through
7. Discard something you already see a lot of on the table
8. Pray.

Oh, another good rule to live by. If it's 2/3rds into the game, and nobody has thrown a certain honor tile, don't fucking throw that shit either. Somebody is waiting on it.
