you have to analyze why ZUN does things the way he does. the reason why ZUN introduces new characters is to introduce new danmakus. that's what the game is about: danmaku. each character exists precisely because of his attacks. the design is a complement to the attacks.
if Mystia exists it's because ZUN said: "hey, I want to create a character that darkens the screen, but I need a justification for this, so I have to design a character that uses darkness as an attack and give it a background so it doesn't feel flat"
